About AFFAM

The American Foundation for Aesthetic Medicine (AFFAM) is a non-profit organization founded in 2020 to promote and advance the educational standards in the practice of aesthetic medicine by non-physician practitioners, including physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

Mission Statement

AFFAM aims to set the standard in clinical post-graduate training for licensed practitioners through hands-on mentorships that combine didactic, practical, and research components to provide specialized knowledge and skills in the field of aesthetic medicine.

BETTER TEACHING THROUGH FELLOWSHIP

AFFAM believes that high-quality specialized training can only occur through a hands-on, supervised mentorship. AFFAM fellowships will:

Feature a 6-month clinical rotation in a plastic surgery practice providing exposure to surgical, non-surgical, injectable, and laser- & light-based treatment modalities.
Offer hands-on experience in a supervised clinical setting to allow licensed eligible providers to integrate aesthetic medicine modalities safely into their practice.
Provide specialized knowledge through evidence-based medical education via an established curriculum and assessed through a qualifying examination.
Promote the pursuit of clinical research and medical publications in the field of aesthetic medicine to foster an environment of learning and promote the growth in number of mentorships.
Be supervised by a preceptor who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) or American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).
Implemented in a specialized clinical and surgical setting that meets criteria for safety and quality standards and is accredited through the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), Institute for Medical Quality (IMQ), or The Joint Commission (TJC).
